Unfortunately, mineral deposits, soap scum, body oils, and product residue are often mistaken for ordinary dirt. That can lead people to scrub harder or reach for harsher chemicals, sometimes creating more problems than they solve.

Soap Scum


What it looks like: A cloudy, sometimes slightly greasy film that dulls the appearance of the glass.

What causes it: Soap residue combines with minerals in the water and clings to the surface.


Soap scum is especially common on shower doors, where soap, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, skin oils, and moisture repeatedly collect and dry.



Mineral Buildup


What it looks like: White, chalky deposits that may appear spotted, cloudy, or rough to the touch.

What causes it: Minerals left behind as water evaporates from the glass.


Over time, repeated exposure can create stubborn deposits that require patience, proper chemistry, and more than one treatment. Heavy buildup should not automatically be met with aggressive scrubbing, as excessive force may damage the glass or surrounding finishes.

Always begin with clean microfiber towels. Fold them into sections, rotate to a fresh side as you work, and replace them once they become damp, saturated, or visibly dirty.

Also take note of the materials surrounding the glass. A product that is safe for glass may not be appropriate for natural stone, metal finishes, grout, caulk, painted surfaces, or wood trim.
